Congenital Heart Defects (CHDs)

There are close to 3 million people in the U.S. with congenital heart defects —more than half of whom are adults.

  • CHDs affect nearly 1% of—or about 40,000—births per year in the United States.
  • Children and adults with CHD may require special education and support throughout their school and working years.
  • 4 in every 10 adults with heart defects have a disability, with cognitive disabilities (trouble concentrating, remembering, or making decisions) being the most common type.
